QUESTION
Is it okay if my toddler eats the same meal every day?
Yes — it can be okay in the short term for a toddler to want the same meal every day. Many toddlers go through phases of strong food preferences and repetition because familiar foods feel comforting and predictable.
What matters most is the bigger picture. If your toddler is eating a reasonable variety overall, growing well, and getting foods from different food groups over the course of a few days, the same meal every day is usually not a problem. The main concern is when the diet stays very narrow for a long time, especially if it crowds out important nutrients like iron, protein, fruits and vegetables, or dairy/other calcium sources. A very limited long-term diet can raise the risk of nutritional deficiencies, including iron-deficiency anemia.
It’s usually better not to force a food battle, since pressure to eat can increase mealtime stress and make selective eating worse. Instead, keep the favorite meal available and gently offer small variations and other foods alongside it.
If your toddler is losing weight, has low energy, is dropping foods or food groups, or is eating only a very small number of foods for an extended period, check in with your pediatrician.
