A standing desk can be worth it for back pain, but only if you use it as a way to change positions—not as a cure or a mandate to stand all day. The best results usually come from alternating sitting and standing, setting the desk at the right height, and taking short movement breaks.

If your back pain gets worse after long sitting, a sit-stand desk is likely worth trying. Start with 15–30 minutes standing at a time, then switch back to sitting. Keep your elbows around 90 degrees, screen near eye level, and weight evenly distributed. An anti-fatigue mat and supportive shoes can help.

It is less likely to help if your pain is from an injury, nerve symptoms, poor lifting mechanics, or a chair/monitor setup problem that remains unchanged. If you have pain down the leg, numbness, weakness, fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain after trauma, get medical advice rather than relying on desk changes.
