For most PS5 owners, I wouldn’t call the PS5 Pro a must-buy. The standard PS5 is already excellent, with strong 4K performance at 60Hz and up to 120Hz in supported games, so if you’re happy with how your current games look and run, keeping the PS5 you have is usually the better value.

When the PS5 Pro makes sense

  • You care a lot about image quality and smoothness: The Pro is aimed at reducing the usual tradeoff between performance and fidelity modes in supported games.
  • You have a high-end display: A 4K, 120Hz, or otherwise premium TV or monitor is where the upgrade is more likely to be noticeable, but the difference still depends on the game and your setup.
  • You want the best console version of supported games: The Pro’s stronger hardware can help with higher visual settings and improved ray tracing in compatible titles.
  • You’re fine with a digital-only setup, or you’re willing to add a separate disc drive if you want to play physical discs: The PS5 Pro does not include a disc drive in the box, so that matters if you use physical media.

When to keep the base PS5

  • You’re satisfied now: If your current PS5 already looks great to you, the upgrade will probably feel optional rather than essential.
  • You mostly play on a standard 1080p or 60Hz display: The extra benefit may be modest compared with the cost.
  • You’d rather spend the money on games or accessories: For many people, that gives more value than a hardware upgrade.

Bottom line: Buy the PS5 Pro only if you’re specifically chasing the best visual experience in supported games and the cost makes sense for you. Otherwise, the PS5 you already have is still a very good console.
