QUESTION
Should I buy baby clothes used or new?
For most families, a hybrid approach is the most practical choice: buy most everyday playwear and sleepwear used, and reserve new purchases for next-to-skin basics, special occasion outfits, or gifts.
Why used is often a good choice: babies grow very fast, so clothes often get only a short wear before they’re outgrown. That makes secondhand baby clothes a smart budget option, and many items are in very good condition because they were worn so little.
When to buy new: new can make sense for peace of mind with first-layer basics like newborn onesies or swaddles, milestone outfits like holiday or take-home clothes, or when you need a specific size or style right away and don’t have time to shop secondhand.
A practical rule of thumb: if the item is easy to wash and inspect, used is often the better value. If it’s something you want pristine, very specific, or immediately available, buy new.
Safety note: always wash used baby clothes before use and check for loose buttons, worn elastic, broken zippers, or other small parts that could be unsafe.
There can also be personal comfort reasons to choose new for items that sit closest to the skin, but it’s safest not to assume that used clothes are always chemically safer just because they’ve been washed before.
