QUESTION
Should I buy a used Pixel 5 as a backup phone?
Probably not as your main backup phone in 2026 unless it is very cheap and in excellent condition. A used Pixel 5 can still be a nice lightweight spare for calls, texts, maps, hotspot use, 2FA apps, and occasional photos, but its biggest downside is age: battery wear and expired software/security support make it a weaker buy now.
Buy it only if all of these are true:
- The price is low enough that you would not mind replacing it soon.
- The battery health is acceptable or the seller accepts returns.
- It is unlocked and supports your carrier’s bands/VoLTE.
- The screen, USB-C port, speakers, cameras, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and fingerprint reader all work.
- It has no Google account lock, financing lock, blacklisting, or carrier lock.
My practical recommendation: if you just need a drawer phone for emergencies, travel, or temporary use, a used Pixel 5 is okay. If you want a backup you can trust for banking, work, travel, or several more years, buy a newer used Pixel instead.
