QUESTION
Should I buy a Nintendo Switch OLED for kids in 2026?
For most kids in 2026, I’d lean no on the Nintendo Switch OLED unless you specifically want the nicer handheld screen and can get it at a good price.
It is the premium Switch model, but for kids the extra cost usually doesn’t add much day-to-day value. The OLED does give you a 7-inch OLED screen, 64 GB of storage, improved audio, a better adjustable kickstand, and a dock with a wired LAN port. It also costs about $50 more than the standard Switch.
Why the standard Switch is usually the better buy for kids:
- If they mostly play on the TV, the OLED screen doesn’t matter much.
- Younger kids often care more about the games than the display quality.
- The cheaper model is a better value if you’re worried about wear and tear.
When the OLED makes sense:
- Your kids will play handheld a lot.
- You want the better screen and kickstand for family use.
- The price difference is small enough that the upgrade won’t bother you.
If you want the best value for most children, the original Nintendo Switch is usually the smarter pick. If they mainly want a handheld for travel or couch play, the Switch Lite is often the cheapest practical option.
One caution: if you’re buying in 2026, it’s worth checking whether Nintendo has a newer current-gen console available or launching soon, since that could change the value of buying an older Switch model at full price.
