QUESTION
Should I become an electrician because of AI?
Becoming an electrician can be a good career choice if you want work that is relatively resilient to AI. AI is likely to help with some parts of the job, like planning, paperwork, diagnostics, and learning resources, but it is much less likely to replace the hands-on work, on-site judgment, safety practices, and code compliance that electricians handle in the real world.
Why it may be a strong choice:
- The work is physical and happens in varied, messy environments where flexibility matters.
- It depends on manual skill, problem-solving, and adapting to each job site.
- Electrical work is regulated, so licensed professionals are still responsible for the work.
- AI-driven growth may also increase demand for electricians through data centers, grid upgrades, EV charging, solar, and building electrification.
That said, it is not risk-free. AI will probably change parts of the trade, and the job can be physically demanding, hazardous, and requires apprenticeship and licensing.
So the short answer is: yes, becoming an electrician is a reasonable move if you want a hands-on career that is likely to be less exposed to AI than many office jobs. I would choose it because you like the trade itself, not only because of AI.
