QUESTION
Should I become a flight attendant if I hate being away from home?
Usually, no — if you truly hate being away from home, being a flight attendant is probably not a good fit.
The job often involves overnight layovers, irregular schedules, holiday work, and occasional last-minute changes. Even when a route is planned as a same-day trip, delays or operational issues can still keep you away from home longer than expected.
That said, the exact amount of time away can vary by airline, base, and route structure. Some airlines and some flying patterns may involve more day trips than others, but there is no flight-attendant job that guarantees you’ll be home every night.
If being away from home is a major dealbreaker, you may be happier in a ground-based airline job such as gate agent, ramp/ground operations, or airline office work. Those roles are more likely to let you stay local, though schedules and travel benefits depend on the employer and position.
Bottom line: if staying home most nights matters a lot to you, I’d lean toward no. If you still like aviation, a local airport or airline support role may be a better fit.
