QUESTION
Should I buy a recliner or ergonomic chair?
Choosing between an ergonomic office chair and a recliner mostly comes down to how you’ll use it.
- Pick an ergonomic office chair if you spend long stretches working at a desk, typing, or using a computer. These chairs are generally designed to support upright sitting and make desk work easier.
- Pick a recliner if your priority is relaxation, reading, gaming, TV, or sitting back more comfortably. Recliners are built for a more laid-back position and can feel better for resting.
A simple rule of thumb:
- Desk work: ergonomic chair
- Relaxing: recliner
- Back support while working: ergonomic chair is usually the better fit
- Comfort while resting: recliner is usually the better fit
- Space: recliners usually take up more room and need extra clearance; office chairs are usually more compact
If you want one seat mainly for a home office, I’d lean ergonomic chair. If it’s mainly for a living room or media space, I’d lean recliner.
One caveat: comfort and support vary a lot by body type, chair design, and features, so if possible, try both before buying.
