QUESTION
Should I buy the Philips Hue Bridge or use Bluetooth bulbs only?
If you’re starting with one room and just want to try Hue out, Bluetooth-only is the simpler choice because there’s no extra hardware to buy.
If you think you’ll expand later, buy the Hue Bridge. It’s the better long-term option because Hue Bluetooth is limited to 10 bulbs, while a Bridge can support up to 50 lights. Philips also positions Bluetooth as best for experimenting and the Bridge as the fuller Hue experience.
The Bridge is especially worth it if you want things like control away from home, broader smart home integrations such as Apple HomeKit, or a setup that’s easier to grow. Hue Bluetooth bulbs can later be moved to a Bridge setup, so starting with Bluetooth doesn’t lock you in.
So the short answer is: Bluetooth for testing small setups; Bridge for anything you expect to grow or if you want the full feature set.
