For someone who reads in bed, I’d usually buy a Kindle rather than a Fire tablet.

A Kindle is a dedicated e-reader with an E Ink display and a front light, which many people find more comfortable for bedtime reading than a bright, backlit tablet screen. It’s also usually lighter and more distraction-free, which helps if they like reading one-handed at night.

A Fire tablet makes more sense if they also want a full-color device for videos, games, web browsing, or reading magazines and graphic novels. It’s more versatile, but it’s generally less ideal for extended reading in bed.

So, if the main use is reading in bed: Kindle. If they want one device for reading plus entertainment: Fire tablet.
