The Kindle Colorsoft is very good for manga and okay to mediocre for Western comics and graphic novels, depending on how sensitive you are to page size and zooming.

Manga

  • A strong fit overall. Most manga is black and white, so the Colorsoft’s sharp text and line art work well.
  • Color pages and covers are a nice bonus on the Colorsoft.
  • Its roughly 7-inch screen is usually comfortable for manga, though bigger pages can still feel a little cramped compared with a larger e-reader.

Western comics and graphic novels

  • Usable, but not ideal. Full-color comics are usually designed for larger pages, so a 7-inch screen can make text and details feel small.
  • Color e-ink is also typically less crisp than black-and-white text and art, so some colored art and small lettering may look softer.
  • If you like panel-by-panel reading and don’t mind occasional zooming, it can work well enough; if you want a more tablet-like experience, a larger screen is usually better.

Bottom line

If your main goal is manga, the Kindle Colorsoft is a good choice. If your main goal is Western comics, it’s serviceable but not the best option. The e-ink color also looks more muted/pastel than an iPad or phone screen.
