Yes — for many healthy babies, spitting up after feeds is normal, even after nearly every feed. It’s often called “happy spitting” when the baby is otherwise comfortable and growing well.

Why it happens: babies’ digestive valves are still immature, and milk can come back up more easily, especially if they swallow air or feed a bit too much.

Usually normal if your baby:

  • is gaining weight well
  • seems content after spitting up
  • has regular wet and dirty diapers

Ways to help reduce it:

  • hold baby upright for 20–30 minutes after feeds
  • burp during and after feeds
  • offer smaller, more frequent feeds
  • avoid tight diapers or tummy pressure right after feeding

Call the pediatrician if the spit-up is forceful, green/yellow, bloody, or if your baby has poor weight gain, seems in pain, refuses feeds, or has choking, coughing, wheezing, or breathing trouble.
