QUESTION
Is green poop from stress?
Yes—stress can contribute to green poop, usually indirectly. Stress can speed up gut movement, so bile doesn’t have as much time to break down from green to brown before stool passes. But green stool is also commonly caused by green foods, food dye, iron supplements, antibiotics, diarrhea, or a stomach bug.
If it happens once or for a day or two and you otherwise feel well, it’s usually not concerning. Seek medical advice promptly if you have severe or persistent diarrhea, blood or black stool, fever, significant belly pain, dehydration, unexplained weight loss, or if the green stool lasts more than a few days without an obvious diet or medication cause.
