QUESTION
Is freelance writing dead because of AI?
No, freelance writing is not dead, but the market has changed a lot. Low-cost, formulaic writing — like basic SEO blog posts, simple product descriptions, and generic social copy — is under heavy pressure from AI, and some of that work has been displaced.
That said, higher-value freelance writing is still very much alive. Clients still pay for writers who can do original research, conduct interviews, bring subject-matter expertise, and write in a distinct brand voice. In practice, the strongest opportunities are shifting toward writers who act more like strategists, editors, and niche specialists than pure volume producers.
For SEO and other content work, generic AI output often isn’t enough on its own, and writers who can add real-world experience, originality, and clear expertise still have an advantage. The biggest challenge is that entry-level, stepping-stone writing work has become harder to find.
