QUESTION
Is daycare making my toddler sick all the time?
Yes—daycare is a very common reason toddlers seem sick all the time. It usually doesn’t mean their immune system is “bad”; it means they’re being exposed to lots of germs through close contact with other kids, shared toys, and frequent hand-to-mouth contact.
It can also be normal for toddlers to have back-to-back colds during the first year or two in daycare, especially in fall and winter. What looks like one long illness is often several viruses happening one after another.
What’s generally reassuring:
- mild colds with runny nose, cough, and low fever
- your child is otherwise acting fairly normal between illnesses
- growth, eating, and energy are okay
What’s more concerning and worth discussing with the pediatrician:
- frequent ear infections, pneumonia, or other serious infections
- symptoms that are severe, unusually long, or getting worse instead of better
- poor weight gain, extreme tiredness, breathing trouble, dehydration, or recurrent high fevers
So the short answer is: yes, daycare can absolutely be the reason your toddler is sick so often. If the illnesses are severe, unusually frequent, or don’t follow the usual pattern of common viral colds, it’s a good idea to check in with the pediatrician.
