Is a secondhand high chair safe?

A secondhand high chair can be safe, but only if it’s in excellent condition, has all of its original parts, and is not recalled. Used baby gear should be treated cautiously, and if anything looks questionable, it’s better to pass.

What to check before using one:

• Check for recalls: Look up the brand, model, and manufacture date in the official CPSC recalls database.
• Confirm it meets current safety standards: Avoid chairs that are very old or clearly don’t have modern safety features.
• Inspect the harness: It should have a secure, working restraint system with no fraying, damage, or missing parts.
• Make sure it has a crotch restraint or similar anti-slip design so the child cannot slide out under the tray.
• Check the structure: No cracks, wobbling, loose screws, peeling paint, or broken tray locks.
• Avoid vintage or homemade high chairs: They often lack modern restraints and stability features.

If you can’t identify the model or verify its recall status, skip it and choose a newer high chair instead.
