Is the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid worth it over the gas model?

For most shoppers, the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid is worth it if the price premium is modest and you drive a lot in city/suburban traffic. A fair rule of thumb is:

• Hybrid: about $1,500–$3,500 more than a comparable gas Santa Fe is usually reasonable if you want the better fuel economy and smoother stop-and-go driving.
• Gas model: worth choosing if it is $4,000+ cheaper out the door, or if you mainly drive highway miles and want the lowest upfront cost.

If you keep the SUV for several years, the hybrid’s fuel savings can make the extra cost easier to justify. If you are leasing short-term or buying mostly based on monthly payment, the gas model often makes more sense.
