Spot fake Kijiji listings by slowing down and checking for red flags before you pay.
Big warning signs
- Too cheap: If the price is way below similar local listings, be skeptical.
- Pushes upfront payment: Be careful with e-Transfer, wire transfer, or deposits before you’ve seen the item.
- Can’t meet in person: “Out of country,” traveling, or deployed excuses are common.
- Thin details: Vague descriptions, copied text, or stock photos are suspicious.
- New or odd account: A brand-new account listing several high-value items deserves extra caution.
How to verify
- Reverse-image search the photos.
- Ask for a fresh photo with today’s date and the seller’s name.
- For phones/electronics, check serial numbers or IMEI.
- Meet in a public, well-lit place; use a police safe-exchange zone if available.
Best rule: Don’t send money to “hold” anything. Inspect the item in person, and walk away if the seller is pushy, evasive, or inconsistent.
