How do I fix a laptop that overheats?

Fix a hot laptop by starting with airflow and cleaning, then move to software and hardware checks.

• Use it on a hard, flat surface and keep vents clear. Don’t use it on beds, blankets, or soft furniture.
• Clean the vents and fan: shut it down, unplug it, and use short bursts of compressed air. If you can see the fan, hold it still while blowing air.
• Close heavy apps in Task Manager or Activity Monitor. Games can run cooler if you cap the frame rate.
• Reduce performance a bit in power settings if your laptop supports it.
