The quickest way is to use the built-in battery report for your laptop’s system.
Windows
- Open Command Prompt as admin.
- Run:
powercfg /batteryreport - Open the saved HTML report.
- Compare Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity. If the full charge number is much lower, the battery has worn down.
MacBook
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Battery.
- Check Battery Health or the Info (i) button.
- Look for Maximum Capacity and the condition, like Normal or Service Recommended.
HP / Dell
- HP: Restart, press Esc, then F2 for hardware diagnostics and a battery test.
- Dell: Press F2 at startup for BIOS battery health, or use Dell Power Manager / SupportAssist in Windows.
A lower maximum capacity or a big gap between design and full charge capacity means the battery is aging.
