Check the phone’s IMEI first, then verify it can be activated.
1) Find the IMEI
- Dial *#06#
- iPhone: Settings > General > About
- Android: Settings > About phone
- Also check the SIM tray, box, or back of the phone
2) Run an IMEI check
Use a reputable lookup service to see if it’s reported lost or stolen, such as:
- Stolen Phone Checker
- CheckMEND
- IMEIpro
Also try the carrier’s BYOD/compatibility checker. If it’s blacklisted, activation or service may be blocked.
3) Check for lock screens
- iPhone: If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple ID, it’s Activation Locked
- Android: Make sure the seller removed their Google account before a reset, or Factory Reset Protection may lock you out
4) Test with your SIM
Insert your SIM and test calls and data. This helps show if the phone works now, but it does not prove it isn’t stolen.
Best practice: Ask for the original receipt and seller ID. A clean IMEI is helpful, but check the current price before buying and walk away if the seller won’t cooperate.
