QUESTION
Could humans create a real Jurassic Park?
No, humans cannot create a real Jurassic Park populated by actual non-avian dinosaurs.
The main reason is that dinosaur DNA is far too old and degraded to recover in usable form. Non-avian dinosaurs went extinct about 66 million years ago, which is vastly beyond the timescale on which DNA remains readable. Amber preservation also does not solve this: it can preserve shape and some biological material, but not reliable, complete dinosaur genomes.
Even if a complete genome somehow existed, there would still be a major problem finding a compatible living egg or surrogate to develop the animal. No modern species is a true biological match for a Mesozoic dinosaur.
What is more realistic are two related but different things:
- De-extinction of recently extinct species, such as the woolly mammoth, dodo, or thylacine. These are much more plausible because their DNA is far less ancient.
- Engineering bird embryos to express some dinosaur-like traits, since birds are living descendants of theropod dinosaurs. That could produce a bird that looks a bit more dinosaur-like, but not a resurrected dinosaur.
So the short answer is: a real, original Jurassic Park is not realistically possible, but dinosaur-inspired biotechnology and some de-extinction projects are. Exact scientific capabilities can change over time, so for the latest status on any specific project, check the official source.
