QUESTION
Could aliens be hiding in our oceans?
While it’s a popular idea in science fiction and UFO lore, there is no scientific evidence that extraterrestrial beings are hiding in Earth’s oceans.
A few reasons the idea keeps coming up:
-
The ocean is still only partly explored
Large parts of the deep ocean remain difficult to observe and map in detail, so it can feel like a place where unknown things could hide. Exact figures about how much is mapped can vary by method and source. -
Some UAP reports involve the ocean
The U.S. military and other observers have documented unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs), and some reports describe objects near, over, or interacting with water. But “unidentified” does not mean extraterrestrial, and government and scientific investigations have not concluded that any UAPs or USOs are of alien origin. -
Earth’s deep ocean already contains very strange life
The deep sea has extremophiles and other unusual organisms that can seem almost alien. Scientists study these environments because they may help us understand what life could be like on other worlds.
So, could something unknown be in the oceans? Yes, in the sense that the ocean still holds many mysteries. But if you mean hidden aliens, there’s currently no credible evidence for that.
