Could alien civilizations be too far away to contact us?

Yes. Distance is one of the best scientific reasons we may not hear from alien civilizations.

Why it’s so hard:

  • Light-speed limit: Even the fastest signals take years to reach nearby stars and tens of thousands of years across the Milky Way.
  • Huge galaxy: The Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years wide, so most possible civilizations would be extremely far away.
  • Weak signals: Radio or laser signals spread out and fade, so ordinary “leakage” gets buried in cosmic noise.
  • Timing matters: A civilization could exist far away but not at the same time as us. Their signals may have come and gone long before humans appeared.

So yes, alien life could be out there and still be effectively unreachable. Lack of contact does not prove we’re alone.
