QUESTION
Should I buy a used Honda Odyssey with 220,000 km?
Only buy it if it is very cheap, has excellent service records, and passes a pre-purchase inspection—especially the transmission. At 220,000 km, a Honda Odyssey can still be useful, but it is in “high-mileage minivan” territory where one major repair can wipe out the value of the deal.
My practical rule: buy it only if the price leaves room for repairs and you would still be okay spending money soon on items like transmission work, timing belt/water pump if applicable, suspension, brakes, tires, engine mounts, A/C, sliding doors, and fluid leaks.
Before buying, verify:
- Transmission shifts smoothly hot and cold, with no slipping, shuddering, delayed engagement, or hard shifts.
- Full maintenance history, not just oil changes.
- Timing belt/water pump service status if the model year uses a timing belt.
- No overheating history, coolant leaks, or oil leaks.
- No rust underneath, especially if driven in a snow/salt region.
- All doors, power sliding doors, A/C, electronics, and rear climate controls work.
- A mechanic inspects it before money changes hands.
Bottom line: a well-maintained Odyssey at 220,000 km can be a good budget family vehicle, but I would pass if there are no records, any transmission symptoms, major rust, overheating signs, or the seller is asking normal low-mileage money.
