In most home setups, the grinder has the bigger effect on cup quality than a more expensive coffee machine. A grinder that produces consistent particle size helps coffee extract more evenly, while a better machine can only do so much if the grind is uneven.

A good grinder also improves results right away with brewing methods like French press, pour-over, drip, and AeroPress, so you can get better coffee even before upgrading your machine.

If you’re focused on espresso, prioritize an espresso-capable grinder first, then upgrade the machine later. If you already own a decent grinder, or you care more about convenience than taste, a better machine may make more sense.
