Should I buy Amazon Basics or brand name cables?

For most cables, I’d buy the cheapest option that clearly meets the spec you need.

For digital cables like HDMI, USB, Ethernet, and many basic audio cables, expensive brand-name cables usually do not improve picture, sound, or data quality if both cables are properly made and meet the required standard. In practice, the main differences are often price, build quality, shielding, strain relief, connector fit, and durability. If a cable is certified for the speed/standard you need, the cheaper one is often the best value.

Amazon Basics is a reasonable choice when:

• You want a low-cost cable that meets the required spec.
• The cable will mostly stay plugged in.
• You’re using it for ordinary everyday devices.

A brand-name cable can be worth it when:

• You want better durability for frequent unplugging or travel.
• You need a more demanding spec or certification, especially for things like high-speed HDMI, Thunderbolt, or long runs where quality control matters more.
• You care about extras like braided jackets, better strain relief, or sturdier connectors.

For analog cables—for example some RCA or turntable connections—build quality and shielding can matter more than they do for digital cables.

So the short version: don’t pay extra for better signal quality on a cable that already meets spec. Pay more only if you need better durability, a specific certification, or a more robust physical build.
